The E231-1000 series Kozu cars were introduced in 2004 for the Tokaido Line. The cars are characterized by their promotion of universal design, with the installation of lamps for opening and closing the boarding and alighting doors, and the addition of through doors as a fire prevention measure from the third train onwards.
